Well, one of the ways I hope that students prepare is to read about Germany and its history and culture and then to write about what you read. In my experience leading study abroad for years I think that when students write about what they read and experienced, they will not only understand it better and remember it more fully, they will also come to terms with the historical and cultural context of the experience and then be able to compare and contrast it with their lives in the United States.
